Precision Engineering
The traditional craft of instrument-making is an old one. Naturally, we have used a variety of computer-controlled machines, 3D drafting, and modern joining techniques for many years. Yet working out constructive solutions to the questions and requirements posed by clients, scientists, designers or inventors remains just as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Strong skill within the precision engineering trade is a must. Mascal Design is equipped to work with a wide range of materials and can deliver exactly the right products.



Prototypes
Prototypes are indispensable for getting a proper sense of appearance, look and feel, or overall experience. Holding an actual (scale) model is valuable for designers. A tangible version of a new design is needed to form a sound final judgement. Within our instrument-making workshop, Mascal Design has the capability to produce high-quality technical prototypes. After scale models have been made, the actual full-size products are often deployed for their intended applications. In some cases, the prototype is already the final product and can be used directly for testing. Prototyping is very much a core part of the instrument-maker's craft.



Moulds
Following the design-to-prototype process, the next step is often a possible pilot (zero) series. This is usually done for plastic products, which need to be tested in the correct materials. Mascal Design builds and manages (trial) moulds in its own workshop, allowing this kind of testing to be carried out with great care. These can be aluminium moulds or, where appropriate, steel moulds, depending on the expected follow-up process. For these tests, various plastics can be used, either in natural colour or coloured to specification. Subsequent series can be produced in-house. Where confidentiality is required, such a test process can be carried out entirely in a secure setting — Mascal Design offers a quiet, controlled test environment for exactly this purpose.




Injection Moulding
This is where instrument-making meets the world of production. Mascal Design can run production moulds on an Arburg 35-tonne or 70-tonne injection moulding machine. In some cases, Mascal Design co-invests in parts of the production tooling itself.This reduces the remaining investment cost and speeds up the step towards a test or production tool. This investment model can help a developer or start-up bring a product to market more quickly. Mascal Design keeps a range of plastic materials in stock and can prepare and process trial colours. We also have a strong, established network of suppliers who can advise on the right choice of materials..
